WD MyBook Duo NAS Data Recovery

Initial Cause of Data Loss

A Western Digital MyBook Duo NAS containing two Western Digital 3.5" 10TB hard disk drives was brought to us for data recovery. The NAS failed to boot, preventing the client from accessing their data. There were no prior indications of failure, and the NAS was believed to be configured as RAID 0 or JBOD.

Diagnosis and Findings

Our recovery team conducted a detailed analysis and confirmed that the issue was hardware-related:

  • One drive had a degraded read/write head and multiple bad sectors.
  • The other drive had failed.

We must recover data from the failed drive and rebuild the data structure. A cleanroom is required for this case.

Data Recovery Outcome

Despite the severity of the hardware failures, our engineers successfully recovered most of the data. After completing the recovery process, we conducted an online data verification session with the client. They confirmed their satisfaction with the outcome.

Upon confirmation, we extracted the data and put it into a new external drive for our client. The client collected the data at our recovery centre when the transfer was completed.

Suggestions for Preventing RAID Data Loss

To protect your data and improve the chances of successful recovery in the event of a failure:

  1. Avoid Rebooting the NAS continuously: It might trigger the firmware to initialize the RAID, making recovery more complex.
  2. Stop Using the NAS: Continued use can worsen hardware damage, or it might auto-rebuild the RAID structure causing data loss.
  3. Seek Professional Help: Consult a trusted data recovery service when issues arise.
